For decades, cable spools have been a source of frustration on job sites. Heavy, awkward to handle, and often destined for landfill, they have been a necessary but inefficient part of electrical work. Nexans has taken on the challenge of redesigning the spool from the ground up with MOBIWAY™ BOOST — a system that makes installations faster, safer and more sustainable.
The concept is simple but effective. MOBIWAY™ BOOST combines top-selling Nexans cables with a reusable, eco-designed spool made from durable PP5 plastic. The unit features an inner drum for smoother unspooling and rewinding, integrated handles for easier carrying, and rubber feet to prevent roll-offs. With the ability to stack horizontally or vertically, it saves space in vans and storage areas while reducing the risk of spills and tangles.
On site, those refinements translate into measurable gains. Nexans says contractors can complete jobs 10–20% faster using the MOBIWAY™ BOOST system, with fewer safety risks and less downtime. The reusability of the spool also means less waste generated per project, addressing one of the industry’s persistent challenges.
Sustainability is a core part of the design. While most traditional spools are recyclable, limited facilities and poor recycling practices have seen many end up in landfill, MOBIWAY™ BOOST changes that model by being returnable, refillable and reusable multiple times. Nexans reports that since 2023, more than 33,000 spools have been returned through its recycling initiatives, including nearly 14,000 MOBIWAY™ BOOST units — representing roughly 22 tonnes of material kept in circulation. By extending the life of each spool, the system reduces raw material use and lowers the environmental impact of cable distribution.
Besides expanding the range to include Earth, Climate, Switch, and Current cables — enabling electricians to wire entire houses using the system — Nexans launched the distinct active core striping, DISTINGO™, which provides an instant visual cue, allowing electrical contractors and installers to identify cable conductor sizes and locate active cores at a glance. Now integrated in Current (1mm, 1.5mm, 2.5mm, 4mm, 6mm), Switch (1mm, 1.5mm), and Climate 1.5mm on the MOBIWAY™ BOOST spool system.
Distributed nationwide through J.A. Russell Ltd, Cory’s Electrical, Ideal Electrical, Telfers Electrical, Radcliffe Electrical, Advance Electrical and Active Electrical, MOBIWAY™ BOOST is available now with full product information and support from Nexans. By rethinking one of the most overlooked tools of the trade, Nexans is showing how smarter design can deliver practical benefits on site while contributing to a more sustainable industry.
